The Old-fashioned Employment Hunt . . . Why It Doesn’t Work!

Waiting weeks, even months for a response to your employment hunt.? Got nothing but a couple network marketing calls and lots of TNT (thanks but no thanks) emails?

Does this sound like you? Maybe you’ve been conducting your employment hunt like this:

1. Write a reverse chronology resume highlighting your work history and educational credentials.

2. Post your resume on two or three job websites like monster or hot jobs.

3. Mail or email lots of resumes to a wide range of companies.

4. Contact some agencies and recruiters.

5. Answer a bunch of ads.

6. Wait for the phone to ring.

If this is what you’ve been doing, it's the reason why your employment hunt is in trouble. You’re doing it backwards!

You see, everything has changed since the days when this kind of passive, mass marketing approach worked. If you were working on your job search in the last century you’d probably have some luck. Those were that days when you could count on the numbers eventually working for you.

But this is the 21st Century. And like I said, everything’s changed . . . especially since 911 and Katrina. The reason things have changed is because the expectations of hiring managers have changed. Perhaps the biggest expectation is that a job candidate is expected to know something about the organization, its products or services and its goals.

Secondly, job candidates are expected to come to an interview with specific recommendations as to how they can make a contribution to the organization and its bottom line. An employer wants to know very specifically how you can make a difference.

If you fail to make that connection for an employer, you just LOST! And the job opportunity will be offered to someone who can . . . regardless of what’s written on your resume.

So, go back and take a close look at how you’re conducting your employment hunt campaign. Are you doing the homework required to meet employers’ expectations? If your efforts look like the list above, you’re not. And you’ve condemned yourself to weeks and months of disappointment and disillusionment.

The secret to making your employment hunt work for you is to have a PLAN . . . specifically a contemporary marketing plan that prepares you for today’s sophisticated job marketplace. Without a blueprint that shows you step by step how to go after the right employers and cut a deal with them, your employment hunt is in trouble.

In short, the old-fashioned job hunt strategies are, well, old-fashioned. By contrast, when you utilize some of the exciting alternative techniques currently available, you can be entertaining a good job offer in as little as two weeks!
